Historic Downtown & Courthouse Area

Hood County Courthouse Historic District
The heart of Granbury’s historic fabric is centered around the Hood County Courthouse Historic District, which includes the courthouse square and the surrounding blocks with Victorian commercial and residential buildings. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its boundary is generally defined by streets like Bridge, Pearl, and Houston.

The Hood County Courthouse (1890–1891) anchors the district, surrounded by many 1880s-1890s buildings such as banks, saloons, and the Granbury Opera House (1886).

The town square and adjacent streets offer restored Victorian-era buildings with shops, galleries, and eateries, bringing everyday life into proximity with history.

Historic Residential Neighborhoods
Just beyond the courthouse square, there are older residential blocks and streets that contain homes built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These neighborhoods aren’t always large subdivisions like newer developments, but they feature:

Victorian, Folk Victorian, and early Craftsman homes on oak-shaded streets.

Properties that contribute to the Historic Compatibility Overlay District, which includes residences around the downtown core that maintain historic scale and appearance.

Some older homes along streets like Bluff Street, Doyle Street, Spring Street, and others, where original settlers’ homes and early 20th-century houses still stand.

Historic Preservation & Overlay Districts
The City of Granbury has established historic overlay districts to protect and guide development within these historic areas, preserving architectural character.

The Historic Preservation Overlay (HPO) covers the core — especially commercial and landmark structures.

The Historic Compatibility Overlay (HCO) includes adjacent residential areas with older homes that contribute to Granbury’s overall historic feel.

Historic Living Experience
Living in these parts of Granbury means:

  • Walking distance to the historic town square and community events.
  • A neighborhood feel with tree-lined streets and older architecture.
  • Being part of a preservation-minded community where historic homes and character are valued.
